The first ever Joomla! Doc Camp has now officially drawn to a close so I thought I’d report on how it went. Well, in a word: “brilliantly”. A huge amount of documentation was created including important material for Joomla! 1.5 which is now on the verge of going Stable. The focus of our efforts was the new wiki at docs.joomla.org which will gradually become the central resource for all official Joomla! documentation.
We had 153 people registered on the wiki making a total of 1377 edits (or commits in developer-speak) over the three-day (official) event. That material will take us quite some time to review and organise properly, but it has given a tremendous boost to the documentation effort. Thank you to all of you who took part and generously gave up some of your time to contribute to the project. I hope you all got as much fun out of as I did.
Here are just some of the highlights:
- The FAQs have been moved from help.joomla.org to the new wiki (thanks Elin).
- We now have a range of labour-saving templates and shortcuts that will help us organise and maintain the wiki (thanks CirTap)
- Good progress was made in transferring material, particularly the API Reference, from the old wiki at dev.joomla.org to the new wiki (thanks CirTap).
- Almost half of our high-priority help screens have now been written (thanks to RoscoHead, Localicer, Zvaranka, Annamari, Scsa20 and Marieke)
- Yet again the GHOP students gave an impressive performance. Several of them were so keen they even kicked off the event a day early and they all did a tremendous job throughout the weekend. It was eerily quiet on Monday when they all went back to school! (thanks to all the GHOP students who contributed).
But it doesn’t end here! Writing documentation is a continuous process and we’d like to encourage everyone who joined us during the event to carry on working on that process and help bring our documentation up to standard. And even if you couldn’t join us this weekend, it’s not too late to register on the wiki and begin contributing. It’s fun and it’s appreciated.
And finally, a special thank you to Rastin Mehr and Johan Janssens for organising our two physical locations in Vancouver and Brussels respectively. I hope everyone who came to these locations had a great time and learned a lot.
