A little progressive thinking from our friend, Elpie, down at the Mambo Foundation. They are starting a women’s user group called “Mambo M’Lady” that is intent on supporting women in their use of Mambo and also empowering women in open source.
It seems they have found an enormous divide between the number of men and women participating and they discovered women tend to be uncomfortable joining forums. And, thus, they are doing what they can to help this segment of the population join in and reap the enormous benefits of free and open source software.
Smart thinking.
Way to go, Elpie, and thanks for supporting and empowering the Women of Open Source! The article will tell you more, give it a read. For women interested in participating, you will find information for how to get involved.
It appears to me that Mambo is starting to reemerge with a new identity and mission and passion as they find their own interesting problems to solve. That is good for the people of the world and I am thrilled for the broader open source community to see this happen!
I shared this with Joomla!, as well.

Perhaps - often the third party extensions, that are so rapidly coming out for J!, are underdeveloped and instead of using them we should look to independant solutions that offer simple content handling as well? Also, we may tend to jump to using them because we're familiar with J!, when customers might not be and may not need a CMS at all.
Its important to remember that because of Joomla's seperate front and back ends not all site customisations can be done through the front end and I think that's a major indicator that total front end solutions should always be searched for...

When I have to resize an image for use on a web page, I open up Fireworks. I realize that most people don't want to buy that kind of software when they only need to to do a tiny job. Up till now I would recommend GIMP, a free open source tool.

A while ago I blogged about comparing the popularity of Drupal to
Joomla, both in terms of traffic and searches. I have also been talking
recently about how Joomla is becoming better suited as a blogging
platform. Just today, I was messing around with Vince Wools trying to
make a Joomla permalink mambot.
With my mind on blogging with Joomla right now, I thought I...
